THERE IS NO DIRECT CORRELATION, but lately my gardens have been seeping into my paintings, and vice versa. In a way it makes sense, since I am spending about equal amounts of time these days bending among the flowers and standing at my easel, but as always it comes as a bit of a surprise.

The line between gardening and painting is a thin one to begin with; only the media and size of the canvases  differ. This wafer edge is porous, allowing for cross pollination: the paint becomes thicker, more lush, even as the gardens, after days of weeding, pruning, and transplanting, come into sharper focus. Beyond my modest intervention, plant and paint travel freely of their own volition.
